Dr. Filiz Kiral

Filiz Kiral studied Turcology at the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, Germany. In 1997 she completed her Ph.D. thesis on the influence of Persian on the spoken Azerbaijanian in Iran. She has conducted fieldwork among Turkic peoples in Iran, especially among the Azeri, Qashqay and Khalaj. Currently she is investigating the Khalaj language, which is on the brink of language death.
From 1997 to 2004 she was employed as a research fellow at the Sonderforschungsbereich 295 at the Johannes Gutenberg University, Mainz, on Linguistic and Cultural Contacts. Its Turcological project deals with Turkic varieties of Iran and southeastern Turkey. Since 2004 she is a research fellow at the Orient-Institut Istanbul, where since 2007 she functions as the acting director.
